Turn a random chat into a real conversation
Most random chats are short, and that is fine. Occasionally you meet someone you could talk to for an hour. These habits make that more likely.
Open with a real question
"Hi" gets skipped. Try "What is the best thing you ate this week?" or "What are you supposed to be doing right now?" A specific question gives the other person something to answer.
Use interests
Add one or two honest interests before you start, such as "cricket", "guitar" or "anime". You will be matched with someone who picked the same word when possible, which gives you something to talk about from the first message.
Be a good listener
- Ask a follow-up question before you share your own story.
- Keep it light at first. Save the heavy topics for people you know.
- Respect cultural differences. Different is not wrong.
Know when to move on
If a chat is dull, rude or uncomfortable, press Esc or Next. If someone is inappropriate, use Report. You owe a stranger nothing.
Keep yourself safe
Do not share your phone number, address, school, workplace or social accounts with someone you have just met, and never send money or photos. If you want to keep talking to someone, take your time, and read our safety tips first.
